spectrogram of the human voice singins the vowel ah

Spectrogram of a tenor singing /a/

I have been fascinated by the concept of overtones from the moment I learned how timbre works. I often find myself playing around and editing little snippets of the voice to see what new sounds I can make. I realized this kind of play is what is missing in the discussion of overtones and harmonics for singers. Many books and videos talk about the spectrogram from the sole perspective of "Here is a sound, here is its spectrogram." I'm creating a series of videos that flip the approach: using the spectrogram as the starting point for understanding the sounds. These videos will help singers understand how the spectrogram relates to the sounds they are hearing and how physical changes relate to sonic changes.

The first video is underway, and my goal is to publish it on YouTube by February 28, 2026.
