I have always enjoyed the style of Jules Verne's books: the optimism and trust in the indomitable human spirit is infectious. I wanted to write a piece that captured the essense his most famous book without giving a play-by-play of the events. To this end, I focused on three abstact ideas at work in the novel: the belief in human ingenuity, the mystery of the island, and the main characters' effort to preserve their lives no matter where they live.
